I'm a concise and clear writer highly suitable for technical and business projects with an extensive business management background. If you require proficiency in condensing material, just call on me. I can also assist with CVs and resumes. I'm available to write topical magazine articles as well as travel articles based on past and future explorations. For increased creativity I'm involved in several fiction projects -- a collection of short contemporary stories and some flash fiction. A current favourite is expanding on my original short story based on a 'four footed' creature -- it's not a dog -- and not a cat! This story may be more suitable for the 8-12 age group but I'm having great fun with it. New projects are always exciting. I am available for writing or editing -- non-fiction or fiction. Refer to my web site for more information http://callvibrown.tripod.com

I enjoy engaging in a variety of literary genres (poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, memoir, playwriting, screen writing, photography), oftentimes merging the genres into hybrid forms. Memoir has been my choice medium in recent years and was in turn my thesis for my MFA at UBC. Now, I have found myself squarely in the middle of all of the aforementioned forms. I'm a graduate of the MFA Program in Creative Writing at UBC (2005) and a recipient of the Earl Birney Scholarship. In 2006, I was named Lichen Magazine's Tracking a Serial Poet, and more recently I have won the Bliss Carman Poetry Award through Prairie Fire Magazine (2006). I am currently revising my short-listed entry in the 29th annual 3-Day Novel Contest into a play in five acts, in addition to completing a collection of personal essays and a poetry manuscript.

Poetry has been my obsession for a number of years. As I've honed my skills as a poet I have enjoyed learning in writers' groups, from numerous mentors along the way as well as during my two years of poetic indulgence at U.B.C. where I obtained an M.F.A. in Creative Writing in 2000. My joint focus there was non-fiction. I also worked for some time as a freelance writer, my main subject area was health and medical writing. I love to give readings from my poetry and to connect with the audience and their responses. I have taught poetry courses through Langara College's continuing studies programme, teaching being another passion and also a great learning experience for me as it allows me to enter another person's perspective as we explore their writing.

I am an award-winning poet, journalist and author. I have supported myself as a professional writer since 1978, authoring five books (nonfiction and poetry) and over 2,000 articles, poems and short stories appearing in newspapers and magazines around the world. I also produce my own zines and my hand-built, trash-based book-art objects under my imprint of Pig Squash Press. Books made from roofing tarpaper, tree bark, paper bags. I organize many poetry and art happenings where I live, from Nanaimo's first "Poem Gallery" in a vacant storefront, to "Poets in the Underpass" where Nanaimo's homeless sleep, to the "Urban Eyes Art Exhibition" featuring 52 artists and architects on the theme of urban development. Basically, wherever I see a need--a poverty of collective vision and imagination--I try to address it publicly and locally through poetry and art. I also give talks and workshops on poetry, hand-built books, how to make a living as a writer, unlocking writer's block, Tai Chi as a path to writing, and more. I can be booked for public readings and talks through the League of Canadian Poets or The Writers' Union of Canada. (Contact me first.)

My business writing style is crisp, clear and smooth, and my fiction and other writing emerges in an honest and amusing way that people can relate to. I admire the laugh-out-loud writing style of American humourist Dave Barry, and aspire to the wry wit of Canadian essayist Arthur Black.

My writing career started in my teens, when I wrote novelettes of my dreams and hopes. Always a journal writer and always interested in writing, I joined a writer's circle in 2006 where I was encouraged to pursue a life-long dream of taking my interest more seriously. Presently I am working on a fantasy piece for adults that marries the ideas of conservation of the planet and the soul.

From a very young age, my life was transformed by words - words in books and magazines that took me away to new worlds I may never have known. It was no surprise to me then, when I realized I wanted to use words to impact other's lives too. I write because it is what makes me fully alive. I lose track of time and space when I am at play or at work with words. My special loves are metaphysical, philosophical and transformational writing. However, I enjoy writing about almost anything. I also enjoy the research, interviewing, and background work. It's all good!

My ultimate concern is always the creative use of language; nothing else matters in the writing game.

Publications

Publishing credits include humorous articles in dozens of magazines in Canada and the United States, several 'how-to' pieces for writers' magazines (Canadian & US), one self-published political satire that won something better than praise--hate mail. A collection of my humorous pieces was nominated for the 2008 Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour; acclaimed as 'The Accidental Humorist', I do humorous readings for business and social groups; a student of verse for some sixty years, I do not write poetry (if I can help it) but have assisted many emerging poets with their work.

My work in progress (begun 1998) has the working title: "Most Excellent Citizens". It is a history of Canada's war brides of World War 2, written by someone who lived the experience and who has interviewed well over 200 war brides. I will also be working on a National Register of Canada's WBs of World Wars 1 and 2, which will follow "Citizens". I hope this will become an ongoing project as, although information on the 48,000 WBs of WW2 is in the National Archives, it is very difficult to access. (Very little has been recorded of the WBs of WW1.)

My writing is a way of putting words to situations that may be too painful to talk about. I often write about issues related to historical trauma, generational grief, genocide and survival. It is the will and determination to survive that inspires my writing, helps me to understand myself better and to evolve as a writer. Writing has been the greatest gift I have to get at the truth. Most of my work has been been presented through storytelling and performance, as opposed to being published.

Barbara is a writer and poet, who for many years lived on a small island in the coastal waters of British Columbia, Canada. There, she worked as a newspaper reporter for the Bowen Island Undercurrent, and during her last two years on the island, reported on the activities and politics of the community for CBC Radio One. Writing has been in her bones forever; at age 11, she would put herself to sleep every night by creating stories in her head. Gifts and Bones, the first in the Bea and Mildred mystery series, is Barbara's inaugural novel. The second in the series, Isabella's Passion, will be released in 2008.

Meltdown. Self-exile. Now, 20-odd years later, writing again -- mainly poetry (though I have other projects, including rejuvenating 20-year-old 350-pg mss, a "journey memoir"). I am most interested in the ghazal form of poetry, especially as evolving in Canadian writing. Have written journalism. Three years as regular contributor to The Island Word on vegan, raw foods nutrition, environmental & animal liberation. I live with & love dogs.

From an early age I have wanted to write novels. That urge was sublimated through careers as a journalist and communications manager, but like a forest fire smoldering underground, it never quite died out. In my mid-thirties, an age when many of us catch the do-or-die bug, I began writing fiction in earnest. My first book, Josh & the Magic Vial, was published by Thistledown Press in 2006, my second, Einstein Dog, will be released in October, 2009. I feel blessed, and greedy for more blessings from the stingy muse, who drives me on. My most important discovery is that writing is not just an art or a vocation; it's a way of being in the world. I hope to die at my keyboard, plonking away at my last, unfinished novel.

Publications

Josh & the Magic Vial (novel, Thistledown Press, 2006); Einstein Dog (novel, Thistledown Press, 2009); Overboard (novel, self-published, 2008); Blowdown (short novel, self-published, 2008); Rub-A-Dub-Dub (short novel, self-published, 2007).
