Einstein Dog

Writing is one of the things that defines me as a human being. I can trace the urge to write all the way back to my years in elementary school. I caught the bug early and - like malaria - it won't go away.

I was born on an air base near Winnipeg, Manitoba, grew up in Montreal, and emigrated to British Columbia when I was 23 years old. BC is home and I consider myself a West Coast writer.

After a couple of lackluster stabs at university, and a string of low paying factory jobs, I finally took a journalism course at Langara College in 1981, earning a diploma. For 15 years after that, I worked as a reporter and editor on community newspapers.

I met my partner, artist Diana Durrand, in 1989. Together we have raised two sons, Daniel and Ian. Family life has defined me deeply and intimately. I don't think I ever would have matured as a writer if not for the commitment, love, and challenges of family.

In 1996 I transitioned from journalism to communications. I am presently Communications Manager with a mid-sized BC school district.

In the mid-90s I began writing fiction, after a hiatus of about a decade. My first published novel, Josh & the Magic Vial, was released by Thistledown Press in October 2006; my second, Einstein Dog, in October 2009. I have three others in various stages of completion and am working on my sixth novel, Stained Glass, which can be viewed in progress at
instainedglass.blogspot.com.

More recently I am exploring ways of "StoryBuilding", that is, engaging audiences in works of fiction that are being researched and written. I believe new communication technologies open up opportunities to expand the scope and experience of writing and reading novels.
